Importance of a Website for a New Start-up Business

Everyone is aware of the importance of having strong online presence today and of the vast opportunities for business which a well throughout and executed website plan can create.

The position for new business start-ups is often more crucial as, provided it is done correctly, it can provide the benefits of being a method of cheap advertising and grant access to potential customers both here and abroad.

Unless the proposed new business is specifically internet based many owners pay little or very latent attention to the online marketing aspects of the business. This is even more so the case where they have no prior technical knowledge or experience with websites.

Competitive Disadvantages

The risk that a new business faces if it ignores the internet altogether or fails to furnish its online presence with adequate resources is that it will allow its competitors to attract its potential customers unchallenged.

Although some industries may lend themselves to be more prone to internet orders, it is generally acknowledged in the vast majority of sectors that a website is at least an advertise board and often the first point of contact that the customer has with the company.

In not having any such media the business may often lose business when customers search for information outside office hours or think that there is not a credibly enterprise there as it does not have a website.

Something is Better than Nothing

Based on the above, it could easily be suggested that that something is better than nothing and in many respects that it true. In most cases it is far better to have a one page website than nothing at all.

Very few sites are completed in one day. They, like most businesses evolve and grow over time and so starting with something simple with plans to add new information about products and services is certainly a step in the right direction.

Simple design and hosting packages can be purchase for less than fifty pounds per year and many of the Customer Management Systems that are available no technical skills other than be able to use a word processing program are usually required.

Website Specifications

Whether a serious attempt is made at a business website from the beginning or at some later stage, having a website specification is both sensible and cost effective.

Deciding on the sort of image to be projected and the type of information that will be available are all questions which should be answered well in advance of any build exercise.

In additional to the customer and visitor experience, the business should consider maintenance aspects such how easy it would be to add pages, make changes and generally keep the look fresh and up to date.

Time permitting; it is far more advantageous for these elements to be available in-house so that alterations can be made quickly and cheaply.

The Case Study included here is a detailed specification for a website build. It highlights some of the considerations to bear in mind and specifically details how the functionality should include facilities for owner managed control.
