Criticism of the Method
September 27th, 2008 . by adminThe mind map was a good way of beginning the project because it induced thought about the subject area and the way in which it could be researched. Having clear objective from the outset helped enormously in reducing to a minimum, the amount of unconstructive time spent in research and preparation.
Formulating the initial questions gave the author a starting point from which to proceed, but because of his initial lack of knowledge of the subject area, it was unclear whether or not these initial questions were paramount to the project or even relevant. It was not until the literature review that it became clear that these starting points were the correct ones, if they had not been, two to four weeks’ work might have been wasted.
While the author believes that the literature review is comprehensive of the issues involved, he can never be certain that important information has not eluded him and thus effect the drawn conclusions.
The author believes that the depth interviewing method provided the most effective way for validating the generated hypothesis. Due to the limited time, however, only one interview was possible. Thus, it is probable that the project does not cover in depth all of the problems presently being faced by many of the stock broking firms.
The project will, therefore, be of greater use to the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce and be of lesser (but hopefully still substantial) use to other broking firms.
The respondent was unable to speak of the specific sums of money involved during the interview. This, the author suspects, affected the conclusions, recommendations, and the implementation plans of the project to the extent that revenues and expenditure could not be compared (for example) and thus a full view of the severity of situation was not obtained.
The conclusions and recommendations are the author’s interpretations of the results and whilst he is an independent body and therefore impartial, his understanding is still lesser than, say, an analyst from the city. It is hoped, however, that the author’s conclusions and recommendations are logical and well founded.
